The Aftermaths of University

Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

-My Way, Frank Sinatra

The final project is over, and these lyrics couldn’t sum it up any more better.

Now I am at that point after university everyone talks about. The dreaded nothingness and unexpected future. These few months straight after will determine your life forever. Not really, but that’s what it feels like. And you know what? It’s not that bad. Yeah, I haven’t got a job yet, nor my own place, but now is the time for me to keep practising what I love doing and plan for the many years ahead of me.

Yes, it does feel like it is taking forever for something, anything, to happen and it makes me feel anxious not knowing exactly what for. I do know what I want to be doing and where I want to go, it will just take me a long time to get to that point. Famous artists were not known for their art since the day they were born, or even straight out of school. Heck, Vincent Van Gogh was more famous after he died!

So what have I been up to since end of June? For a quick view of recent images, pop over to my Instagram or visit my Facebook for more! Do keep an eye out for my updates upon Twitter.

Christmas Robin

Happy Christmas! (10 days early, I know, but I am in the festive mood)

So what do you think of my card design? Obviously without the self advertising text.

Robin Card

Shall I do other designs ready for next year? (Cannot do them for this year as it is too late for printing last minute etc.)

If anyone is interested in seeing more, let me know! I would love to do more designs and sell them!

July Update: Exhibition, Graduation and Relaxation

Gee, it sure has been busy, so here is a quick note on what has been happening!

As part of the end of the year for my course in Illustration, we had to display our work at Swansea’s Grand Theater. It went really well during the opening, practically a full house! Every ones work looked great upon the walls, and the speech by the tutors was so touching! I will miss them all! Well, maybe some of them. Here is a sneak preview of part of my display featuring the needle felt work pieces for the project I had been working on. (More on that in the next post, keep an eye out for it!)

me and felt

Me with my needle felted self portrait. Please make note this was my first ever attempt at a portrait in wool!

Then last month we displayed our art at Londons New Designers show! There were so many universities brought together, and so much inspiration was to be found! My work looked like an ant compared to the vast greatness of the other universities. Like my Facebook page (Sarah Gurmin Art) to see the photos and videos I posted from London! My friend Laura tries on an occulus rift(?)!! Look on my Instagram page (@fortheloveoftheart) to see the photos of my new Teddy friend and our adventure in London!

Finally, the bad and good news….

Bad: My adventure as a BA Illustration student comes to an end…

Good: I got accepted onto the Integrated Masters course for Illustration! And so the journey continues, but onto another level, WOO!

Be expecting to see more of my work posted over summer, as I practice before heading back to University for one last year. And then be expecting to see even more work when I start in September! Hahah!

Keep an eye out!

Like my Facebook page Sarah Gurmin Art for updates on my work, Twitter @SarahGurminArt to see snippets of things and my new Instagram @fortheloveoftheart for my general life.

Dark Skies

Happy Easter! I hope you are all stuffed with chocolate and are enjoying the weather! It’s been the hottest so far here in Wales, UK. Here is a catch up with what I myself have been up to over Easter.

I have indulged in buying some new felting needles from Heidifeathers, who always provides great needle felting equipment and service! These needles have 10 different types, 30 in total. I shall look forward to trying these with my projects!

Currently I am working on a scarf, the patterns are to represent dark skies inspired by Turner, Ian Aivazovsky and Moy Mackay. The scarf shall illustrate the one verse of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem Annabel Lee where things start to go dark, the angels in heaven are not happy and a cold wind blows out and kills Annabel Lee.

These are a few felt examples of colour experiments.

Still not sure what colours to settle with, but keep an eye out for my next blog post to find out!

image

Needle felted self portrait to be used for the catalogue for the exhibition coming up in a few months. This took approximately four hours to do, and I may start taking commisions for portraits. Keep watching!
